This weekend some friends and I will be going to our first ever team event, which is going to be hosted by RichMid Gaming over at Boards and Swords in Derby! Team events for Marvel Crisis Protocol are quite interesting, especially as more recently they’ve switched over to a complete highlander format. I did take part as a stand in for a team event over on TTS way back last year, but this is the first time I’ll be going to a team event where we have actually planned out what we are taking!
With me I’ve got the giant that is Ron Walker and the ginger menace Elliot Woolley. Luckily all of our rosters that we are currently running don’t have too much crossover outside of Crisis cards, so we managed to make our team roster pretty easily! I’ll be taking Web Heads, whilst Ron takes Spider Foes and Elliot brings Sam Spam – And I thought I’d post up our rosters and how building a team roster actually works!
Building a team roster
So for this event, and the one in December at Board in Brum, the format is true highlander. That means only one of any character, tactics card or crisis card. At first this can seem quite daunting, as it means only one player can play any given affiliation – So the dreams of the Web Head team died before they even were a thing! Two players could both play the same affiliation with different leaders, but it would be very difficult due to the crossover of tactics cards and characters that you see stapled to each affiliations rosters.
So between us we picked Web Warriors, Spider foes and Sam Spam. This meant there wasn’t a huge amount of crossover, except Ron let me keep Venom and he took Carnage instead.
Tactics cards are where it got a little bit more tricky for us to decide as a team. Most rosters take Medpack, so the fact that only one of us could take it was a tough debate. As I don’t use any other Banned or Restricted cards, I took Medpack and Ron and Elliot had their choice of any of the others. Elliot went with Brace for Impact and Field Dressing whilst Ron went with All You’ve Got and Doomed Prophecy – For those disgusting Carnage plays. Their wasn’t really any crossover for the rest of the tactics cards – Advanced R&D was one we all wanted but I took it in place of a second restricted card. We all took our affiliation specific cards, and before we knew it we all had our eight tactics card slots filled.
Crisis cards were, well, a Crisis. We all had Hammers, all had Mutant Madmen and all had Spider Infected. The easiest way to sort this was to try and decide on two Crisis cards for both Extract and Secure that we wanted each, as with the current rules the third Crisis doesn’t matter as much. Once we had done this and there wasn’t any crossover, we filled the third slots in each of our rosters from the remaining cards based on which cards we could all play the best. As I said, with the current rules you will never have to play that third Crisis unless you choose to – But it will be interesting to see the changes once the new rules are in place!
So once all of this was done, we finally had three rosters between us that had no crossovers. It definitely wasn’t easy to stick to the highlander format, but in the end we managed to and all ended up with rosters we are happy with! You can find all the rosters below –
