Looking back on MCP, 2021

If you’re looking to jump into Marvel Crisis Protocol, or just need to fill out your roster with some fresh recruits or supervillains, please check out our Sponsor Board in Brum!

The last year has been an absolute rollercoaster ride for Marvel Crisis Protocol, and I’ve loved every moment of it. Looking at the state of the game now, compared to how it was at the start of 2021 is crazy. A year ago if you would of told me that the Hulk and Hulkbuster would be clashing on the table top, Winter Soldier and Crossbones were making a comeback, Deadpool would be eating Chimichangas and the Guardians of the Galaxy were finally getting an updated leadership – I’d probably of said you were being a bit too ambitious. But, here we are, and we have all of that and so much more!

“Fourth wall break inside of a fourth wall break? That’s like… 16 walls!”

Here in the UK, we were lucky enough to have a lot of the lock down and COVID restrictions lifted around April, so we’ve been able to roll plenty of dice and really smash out a bunch of games for MCP! On top of that, lots of people have been playing over TTS as well, so I’m sure that this year there has been tens of thousands of games played, and millions of dice rolled! The game continues to grow and go from strength to strength with each release, and I for one can’t wait to see what else Atomic Mass Games has in store for us.

Looking back on the releases we have had for the game – It has been an expensive year if you’ve been buying everything as it came out! 2021 kicked off with the release of the Inhumans, followed by the X-Force, the Heroes for Hire and then plenty more boxes! In case you missed any of them, or want to see just how many new characters we’ve had, the list of all the character packs we’ve had this year are

– CP34 Black Bolt and Medusa
– CP35 Crystal and Lockjaw
– CP47 Cable and Domino
– CP45 Deadpool and Bob, Agent of Hydra
– CP61 Sin and Viper
– CP49 Luke Cage and Iron Fist
– CP46 Mr. Sinister
– CP63 Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver
– CP37 Amazing Spider Man and Black Cat
– CP50 Carnage and Mysterio
– CP58 Lizard and Kraven
– CP38 Sam Wilson and War machine
– CP53 Jean Grey and Cassandra Nova
– CP54 Omega Red
– CP48 Moon knight and Blade
– CP67 Doctor Strange and Clea
– CP64 Baron Mordo and the Ancient One
– CP33 Dormammu
– CP65 Doctor Voodoo and the Hood
– CP52 Hulkbuster
– CP62 Ms. Marvel

That’s thirty seven new characters! Through those boxes we have gained Inhumans, X-Force, Midnight Sons, Convocation and the Dark Dimension all as brand new affiliations, as well as new leaders for Cabal, Web Warriors and Avengers! There have been five new Crisis cards added, and far too many Tactics cards for me to even bother trying to count!

Trying to keep up with all the new releases has been absolute Carnage for some wallets!

Overall I think this shows just how healthy the release schedule for the game has been. Plenty of people have been more than relieved to have a break of releases through December, although we already know that early next year we will be getting more Uncanny X-Men and the Juggernaut!

As I said there might not be any December releases for the game, but the recent rules update that we had has unleashed a breath of fresh air into some of the earlier characters from the game. Hulk and the Winter Soldier are back with a vengeance, followed by Steve Rogers, Ultron, Ghost Rider and plenty of other characters that have been bought in line with more recent releases. We’ve also seen changes to some of the core rules, and from what I’ve seen so far they’ve all been really positive and healthy for the game!

Could it finally be the Age of Ultron?

Outside of Rules changes and releases, the local crowd around Board in Brum for MCP has almost doubled, as we now have over thirty regular players! I know that lots of other communities have really started to take off around the UK as well, with Element Games, Boards and Swords Hobbies and Sanctuary games all having growing scenes for MCP. The events for MCP around the Midlands and the UK in general has absolutely taken off, and I’ve been lucky enough to go to fifteen events this year – With another four in December to finish the year off! Hopefully I’ll be able to fit even more in next year!

Moving forward I’ll be updating and running a live Events Calendar which you can find Here, which should be really helpful for both players and Tournament Organisers! If your a TO and want your events adding, then please get in touch either through Facebook or any of the Web Warrior Protocols social media accounts!

This post has been a little different to some of the content I’d normally post, but I just wanted to take a moment to look back and appreciate what we’ve been given for the game so far! There are plenty of other content creators, YouTube channels and podcasts out there too, so you should definitely check them out for more Marvel goodness going into the new year!

As always, please leave a thumbs up if you enjoyed reading, or a thumbs down if you didn’t! Please feel free to comment with any thoughts you have! If you’re interested in video content, then check out Wargaming Luke on YouTube as he shares his weekly Marvel videos!
